Description

Research into representation in games often centres on marginalized communities in the West, leaving regions such as West Asia and South Asia underexplored. My theoretical capstone examines this gap through both players’ experiences and developers’ perspectives, exploring the causes of underrepresentation and possible ways forward.

Approach

I began with a literature review of representation in mass media and an audit of characters across five popular games. I then surveyed 458 players and interviewed three industry professionals to bring different perspectives into the research.

I analysed the quantitative data and grouped the written responses into themes, using the findings to examine barriers to inclusion, identify possible solutions and frame further questions for the industry.

Tools Used

Book Design

I brought the research, data visualisations and written analysis together in an approximately 23,000-word publication, and designed its cover and page layouts.
